STFU Moffat

Q:I really like this blog. I think it's important for people to see this stuff. One comment though. I was reading through this and one anon talked about BC defending Moffat. I don't blame him. I think he was just doing what he had to do. Even if he thought Moffat was a bit of an ass, that's not something you say publicly about your boss. For one, he has to keep working with him until the show's over. Secondly, it's viewed as unprofessional. That's all.

You are completely right. It would make absolutely no sense for Cumberbatch to announce at the BAFTAs that he thinks Steven Moffat is a misogynist. However, it makes just as little sense for him to say that he isn’t a misogynist in a BAFTAs speech. Of course he isn’t going to say something like that about his boss - what bothered me, though, was the context. If he had been asked head-on, like Louise Brealey was, if he thought Moffat was a misogynist, I would understand his response. However, the statement made no sense in the context of that speech. It was awkward and uncomfortable, and seemed completely out of place, as if someone had heard about the problems Moffat has had on twitter, and felt that if Cumberbatch said something, people would shut up. And that’s where my major problem with his statement lies. A lot of people probably heard Cumberbatch say that and thought, “See, Moffat can’t be that bad.” However, a privileged white cis man saying that another privileged white cis man isn’t a misogynist doesn’t carry much weight, and that’s what we took issue with.
