STFU Moffat

Q:Not technically a Moffat quote, but I have figured out what really chaps my ass (besides EVERYTHING) about Cumberbatch's "non-misogynist" remark at the BAFTAs--it was awkwardly shoehorned into the only mention of Sue Vertue. Talking about Moffat's wife necessitated clarification that he is not misogynist. He married a woman; how can he possibly hate them? Ugh.

Seriously. I have no clue why he even mentioned that. A lot of sexist men go ‘How can I be sexist? I love women!!’ without realising that ‘loving’ one woman does not mean respecting the entirety of the female sex. Just because a guy is heterosexual doesn’t mean he doesn’t make the women around him upset or uncomfortable.

Also, it should be noted that one woman’s opinion of a person does not negate their misogyny. It’s tiring seeing the whole ‘I’m a woman and I don’t find this offensive!’ over and over again. It’s like… we’re raised in an extremely patriarchal society where people are attacked for finding something offensive and calling it out. Where you’re shunned if you don’t think ‘the Man’ is funny or always right. How then are people in minority groups supposed to find anything offensive when everything is made out to be one big joke around them? And then majority groups feel validated because their ‘token friend’ finds them funny. It’s a vicious cycle.

I don’t want to question Vertue’s and Moffat’s relationship. I’m positive it’s a loving one where they both are happy and equal in power. However, that does not make him not a misogynist, especially given how he treats women in his shows, his female fans or even any fan that tries to point out instances of sexism in his shows. Again, respecting one does not mean respecting the whole and I find it shameful that he has to use his wife to validate his feelings on this.
