lettersfromthemargins: Dear Steven Moffat, Mr. Moffat, I would like to know, has any one ever called you boring? Having seen your Doctor Who and Sherlock episodes, I would doubt that. You don’t seem to like boring very much Mr. Moffat. You do everything in your power to make sure that your shows aren’t “boring” You fill them with explosions, action, and even dinosaurs. And you make sure that none...

targaryenviserys: i really, really dislike the trope in fiction that only the assholes, the bullies, and the “villains” can be homophobic.  (this goes for any hateful -ism, really, but given that it was prompted by homophobia i’m going to run with that.) homophobia would be much easier to dismiss if it only came from the douchebags of the population; if everyone ~good~ looked down on it,...

A Valediction Forbidding Moffat
uncleoakenshield: In response and elaboration to this post which critiqued Moffat and his handling of Doctor Who - for all of you who disagree with it, and continue to idolise Moffat, here is a much more general overview of why you really shouldn’t, with illustrative evidence from Doctor Who and Sherlock. lauraxtennant: grrr what really pisses me off is that people think that just because we criticise Moffat’s writing, we must idolise RTD. No. NO. There was lots wrong with RTD! I found certain things he has said/written repulsive. But he is not the showrunner any more. Yes, we have to still be aware of the things he did that were problematic, but it makes far more sense to put effort into...

Why the word “stupid” is considered ableist →
queeroctopus: neoptolemos: Will someone explain to me why the word “stupid” is considered ableist? Because this seriously baffles me. “Stupid” has been used by the medical community and the community at large to describe people with developmental disorders. My boyfriend was mocked by teachers and called “stupid” because he’s dyslexic. My doctor told my mother I was “stupid” because of...

ineffable-hufflepuff: Your opinions do not exist within a vacuum.  If you say something stupid, misinformed, hurtful, bigoted, problematic, or offensive, you don’t get to cry victim when people take issue with it. You get to have an opinion.  I get to tell you when your opinion sucks.

hardlyalec: finalowen: With the return of Madame Vastra this week, we really should praise the author who had the brilliant idea to create a lesbian Silurian who’s friendly with the Doctor. … No, no, I don’t mean Steven Moffat, I mean Paul Cornell, who did the idea 14 years before Moffat. http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Sanki #I still like Vastra as a character #But it really is funny how...

Why Resetting Time is Annoying and Bad Writing
brilliantfantasticgeronimo: everyonehatesstrudel: In last night’s episode of Doctor Who, The Doctor managed to save the day by resetting time and making sure the episode never happened. Hooray! Or, not really. Because resetting time isn’t just a way to make sure everybody lives and everything becomes okay; its a way to make sure there was no point watching the episode at all.  In this...

What are "systems of oppression"?
takingslutback: First of all, we are all born into different cultures with different personal traits that contribute to our identity. We can control some of these, others not so much. The wheel below shows dimensions of diversity. The inner circle shows race, age, physical ability, mental ability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and ethnicity. We are born with different variations...

aiffe: I’ve read a lot of great essays about how fandom is female-majority and creates a female gaze and a safe space for women and etc. But spend five minutes in fandom and you’ll have an unsettling question. Why does a female-majority, feminist culture hate female characters so much? It’s not a question of if it happens. You know it does. You can go into any fandom and see it. Some fandoms are...

yuriadventure: One of the most ridiculous concepts that society promotes is that we should always consider “the other side”, that we should always compromise, that the truth is always “in the middle. The problem with this is that it ignores how many stances and opinions are completely not compatible with each other. Feminism, anti-racism, and  other similar issues are not a friendly debate....

The Problem of Bromance
flarechaser: WARNING: Since I’m tagging this as ‘bromance’ and I don’t myself like tagging hate (though I don’t really see this as hate?) most of this is going under the cut, and the good/neutral things I have to say about the issue are above it. Bromance is a portmanteau of the colloquial term ‘bro’ and ‘romance’ and is commonly used to denote a particularly strong friendship between two...

Because of the Times
makingfists: It’s like this… You’re fourteen and you’re reading Larry Niven’s “The Protector” because it’s your father’s favorite book and you like your father and you think he has good taste and the creature on the cover of the book looks interesting and you want to know what it’s about. And in it the female character does something better than the male character - because she’s been doing it...

'The Baseline Is, You Suck': Junot Diaz on Men Who...
The Atlantic: It sounds like you're saying that literary "talent" doesn't inoculate a write—especially a male writer—from making gross, false misjudgments about gender. You'd think being a great writer would give you empathy and the ability to understand people who are unlike you—whether we're talking about gender or another category. But that doesn't seem to be the case.
Junot Diaz: I think that unless you are actively, consciously working against the gravitational pull of the culture, you will predictably, thematically, create these sort of fucked-up representations. Without fail. The only way not to do them is to admit to yourself [that] you're fucked up, admit to yourself that you're not good at this shit, and to be conscious in the way that you create these characters. It's so funny what people call inspiration. I have so many young writers who're like, "Well I was inspired. This was my story." And I'm like, "OK. Sir, your inspiration for your stories is like every other male's inspiration for their stories: that the female is only in there to provide sexual service." There comes a time when this mythical inspiration is exposed for doing exactly what it's truthfully doing: to underscore and reinforce cultural structures, or I'd say, cultural asymmetry.

durendals: on a textual level, a female character can dress however she wants and shouldn’t be slut-shamed and hated for what she prefers to wear. on a metatextual level, she might still have been designed with an intention to provide fanservice. this means that criticising a design, as opposed to a character, is neither misogyny nor slut-shaming. being displeased about the way a character has...
